Social anxiety is largely considered one of the most common mental disorders today, affecting an estimated 15 million adults in the US. While it's natural for all of us to experience some anxiety from time to time, the fears of those suffering from social anxiety can actually consume everyday life, and leave them isolated.

Symptoms of Social Anxiety

Social anxiety is typically characterized by excessive fears of social disapproval that cause you to withdraw from social interactions. If left unchecked, the effects of these fears can wreak havoc on relationships, career ambitions, and academic performance. The following are some common symptoms of social anxiety:

  • Excessive anxiety in everyday situations (going to school, work, or the grocery store)
  • Fear of judgement from strangers or people you know
  • Avoiding social situations to ease your fears
  • Drinking before social situations to calm yourself

Social Anxiety Treatment

Those suffering from social anxiety tend to naturally find strategies to cope with their fears. Unfortunately, these strategies sometimes include dulling their anxiety with drugs or alcohol, or avoiding uncomfortable situations all together - both of which cause further suffering. In order to overcome social anxiety you need to learn new strategies which challenge your fears, and strengthen your confidence over time.

The negative thoughts that fuel social anxiety can feel overwhelming and impossible to replace. But, with the proper strategies, support and guidance, you can replace these negative thoughts and reduce your anxiety. Through counseling we can explore the self-doubts which cause you to withdraw, and work to exchange these negative thought patterns with positive thinking habits to challenge your fears.
